Calcium carbide

Calcium carbide is an inorganic compound with a chemical formula of CaC2. It is the main component of calcium carbide. It is a white crystalline powder. The industrial product is a gray-black block with a purple or gray cross section. In case of water, a violent reaction occurs immediately to generate acetylene and release heat. Calcium carbide is an important basic chemical raw material, mainly used to generate acetylene gas. Also used in organic synthesis, oxyacetylene welding, etc.

Chemical formula: CaC2

Molecular weight: 64.10

CAS Number: 75-20-7

EINECS accession number: 200-848-3

Melting point: 447 ℃

Boiling point: 2300 ℃

Water solubility: it decomposes violently in contact with water to produce acetylene gas and calcium hydroxide, and releases a lot of heat. It can react violently with chlorine, hydrogen chloride, sulfur, phosphorus, ethanol, etc. at high temperature

Appearance: The industrial product is gray, yellow-brown or black solid, and the one with higher calcium carbide content is purple

Use:

The action of calcium carbide and water can generate acetylene gas, which is an important basic raw material for organic synthesis. Acetylene gas can produce polyvinyl chloride, neoprene, calcium cyanamide, acetic acid, vinyl acetate ethanol and its derivatives, cyanide

Compounds, dicyandiamide and acetone, etc. The action of calcium carbide and nitrogen to generate lime nitrogen can be used as agricultural fertilizer. Calcium carbide is used to generate acetylene for metal cutting and welding.

Safety:

Calcium carbide powder is irritating, and the sweat on the skin generates Ca(OH)2, which burns the skin until the skin festers. Inhalation can damage the human respiratory system. Wear goggles, masks and gloves at work. The gas in the barrel should be completely discharged during transportation and before storage. It is strictly forbidden to roll barrels, replay, and collide to prevent sparks and explosions. When the package is damaged, electric welding and soldering are strictly prohibited. Water is prohibited for firefighting, only sand or carbon dioxide can be used to put out the fire, and dry sodium carbonate (soda ash powder) can also be used to put out the fire. If you notice dizziness, headache or vomiting, move to fresh air immediately. Severe cases should be sent to hospital for treatment. Packed in iron drums with a wall thickness of not less than 1mm, 100kg or 200kg. The words "Calcium Carbide Avoid Water and Fire" are marked with paint on the side of the iron barrel.

Calcium carbide should be stored in a dry, cool and ventilated warehouse, and should be isolated from combustibles and strong acids. The best special library special storage. Avoid contact with water and moisture. The acetylene gas in the barrel should be emptied before storage. The storage period is preferably 6 to 12 months.
