Polyethylene glycol
Polyethylene glycol is a high molecular polymer, the chemical formula is HO(CH2CH2O)nH, non-irritating, slightly bitter taste, good water solubility, and good compatibility with many organic components. It has excellent lubricity, moisture retention, dispersibility and adhesion, and can be used as an antistatic agent and softener. It is widely used in processing and other industries.
Chemical formula: HO(CH2CH2O)nH
CAS number: 25322-68-3
EINECS accession number: 200-849-9
Melting point: -65℃
Density: 1.125g/cm³
Water solubility: soluble in water, soluble in some organic solvents
Appearance: white granular
Use:
Polyoxyethylene resin is a high molecular weight homopolymer obtained by heterogeneously catalyzed ring-opening polymerization of ethylene oxide. It can usually be divided into those with a relative molecular mass of 2 × 104 or more and tens of thousands or more. The former is called polyethylene glycol, and the latter is called polyethylene oxide. Polyethylene oxide has the properties of flocculation, thickening, slow release, lubrication, dispersion, retention, water retention, etc. In the industry, the product is non-toxic and non-irritating, and will not remain, deposit or breed volatiles during the production process of the product. As a papermaking additive, it can improve the retention rate of fillers and fine fibers, and is especially suitable as a dispersant for long fibers, which can shorten the beating time.
Safety:
It is very irritating to the skin and eyes, and it is difficult to be absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration, and the toxicity is very low. A 5% (by mass) solution of polyethylene oxide in water was injected into the eyes of rabbits causing only mild burning. Polyoxyethylene had little effect on the mortality rate of fish, crabs, anemones, shrimp or algae. Its resins and aqueous solutions are low toxicity and are very safe to use and handle. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved polyethylene oxide aqueous resins for use in specialized food packaging and as a direct additive to beer.
